Obituary for Larry Reuben Sombelon
Larry, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He is survived by his wife Kamaile Aiwohi Castillo Sombelon, daughters Rochelle “Shelley” (Brian “Kalama”) Sombelon-McEwen and Desiree “T” (Timote) Talamai, hanai son Kerry (Amanda) Kamalii, nine grandchildren: Josiah “Siah Man”, Ka’ohe, and Leimomi Sombelon-McEwen; Kymani Sombelon, Lilika, Oketi, Roviana and Tai Talamai; and Kenzie Kamalii.
He is also survived by sisters Margaret “Margo” Kaiama, Shirley Ragsdale Sombelon, and sister-in-law Margaret “Cookie” Souza Sombelon. He was predeceased by parents Santiago and Julia Santos Sombelon.
Larry was an avid horseshoe pitcher having won several State tournaments and served as president of the Rebels Horseshoe Pitchers Club and first president of the Maui Chapter of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Assn. He also coached the Cactus Jack women’s softball team, played on the Wooden Ships baseball team and was a member of the Maliko Roping Club/Hui O Paniolo. He retired as owner of Larry’s Janitorial Services.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Ala Lani Church, 50 South Papa Avenue, Kahului, from 1:00 p.m to 4 p.m. Prayer services to be held at 2:00 p.m. Cremation to follow and private scattering of ashes at a later date. Casual attire, no flowers.
