Obituary

Cherlyn JoAnn Makalapua "Sugar" Cordero-Redenius

Cherlyn was born December 28, 1947 in Puunene, Hawaii on the Island of Maui. She graduated from Baldwin High School in 1965. After High School she moved to Eureka, California where she resided for 50 years. While living in Eureka she graduated from College of the Redwoods and had worked for Bank of America, Humboldt National Bank, Pacific Gas and Electric, California State Unemployment, Louisiana Pacific and California Department of Motor Vehicles from which she retired in 2005. After retirement she moved back to Maui where she and her husband Gary have lived for the past 4 years.
When she was a young girl, she enjoyed dancing Hula at the Hukilau with her sister Janet as her mom played the ukulele. She also enjoyed going fishing and crabbing with her dad. As her family grew, she loved caring for and having fun with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Many days she could be found cruising in her 1968 Fastback Mustang or yelling "Bingo" at the local bingo hall. She stayed active by playing softball with her family and friends. In her later years she enjoyed riding her Harley Trike with her husband Gary.
She is survived by her husband Gary Redenius, brothers Richard Cordero and his wife Leilani, Steve Cordero and his wife Casey, sister-in-law Imogene Cordero, daughter Healani Anderson, sons William Anderson-Langley and Michael Langley and his wife Sherri, daughter-in-law Tammy Anderson, grandchildren Samantha Cordero, Leonard McCullough, Robert Cordero, Kinsaan Hostler, Ozzy Hostler, Detrasha Anderson, Letisha Anderson, Shausha Anderson, Kristen Compton, and great grandchildren Breanna, Malena, Benjamin, Dolce, Joey, Joanna, Kekoa, Kai Lynn and Jackson.
She was preceded in death by her parents Robert A. and Mary Cordero, brother Robert U. Cordero, sister Janet Souza, brother-in-law James Souza, and sister-in-law Johanna Cordero.
Everyone will always remember her as being fearless, daring, strong and patient. Which is why she was able to work at the Department of Motor Vehicles for 25 years. In our hearts she will always be the fun loving, generous and caring sister, mom, grandma, aunty and friend. She was a leader always wanting the best for her family. She would give you a stern look when you've done something wrong and no one would hold you tighter when you were sad or hurting and needed her love. Everyone looked up to her and admired her courage. We will miss her but know she will always be there looking over us.

Sugar was like a mother to me while we attended UHMC. She would always say "Pua" do you need help when I was struggling in class. I remember one field trip we had for Maawe Fiber Arts class with Kumu Lisa up in Kula and I needed a ride which she was more than pleased to offer me. I remember telling her that "wow" you have a nice truck and she said that it was her husband's one and that her baby was at home "the mustang". She then told me the story about how one day someone stole the lens cover off the tail lights and how much it costed and how strange it was to just take one and not both. We had fun at Kumu Lisa's house in Kula where we harvested "wauke" paper mulberry tree to make "kapa". I will always treasure those special moments with her as a caring classmate, a wonderful "wahine", and a super duper SUGAR. She will always be in my heart.
