Obituary

Joseph "BUDDY" Hampel passed away peacefully at Hospice Maui Hale; he was 67. Joe, or "Uncle Buggs," as we called him, was born in Waipahu, O'ahu, and lived in Diamond Head before moving to Maui when his father was hired as the Manager of Kahului Shopping Center.

Joe attended Makawao School and graduated from Maui High School, class of 1971. Buddy was always proud, as were most of his classmates, to have been the last graduating class at the Hamakuapoko campus. After graduation, Buddy enlisted in the Hawaii Army National Guard where he trained as a medic. Upon returning to Maui, Buddy worked at Kula Sands as an aide, then worked as a Paramedic/EMT in Kihei. He returned to Kula San, where he worked until he suffered a back injury which ended his medical career. Although medically retired, he kept current with new medical developments.

Buddy was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Hampel II and Gertrude Ann Dyson Hampel, his sisters, Ann "Sunny" Hampel and Joeann "Merry" Hampel Silva, and by his brother-in-law, MPD Lt. (ret.) Benjamin B. Silva. Uncle Buggs is survived by 4 nieces and 2 nephews, 4 grandnieces, 7 grandnephews, 1 great-grandniece and 3 great-grandnephews. We will all miss you, Uncle Buggs, and when you drink coffee with Gramma Warden, Auntie Sunny, Mom & Daddy, tell them we love & miss them, too.

Per his wishes, a private service will be held at a later date when his 'ohana from Oregon can be present. Please keep Buddy in your thoughts and prayers. Mahalo & aloha nui loa.
