Obituary

JUANA JO-ANN (PELLAZAR) BARONA
MARCH 8, 1934 – FEBRUARY 20, 2020

Juana (Pellazar) Barona, 85, affectionately known as Jo-Ann, passed away unexpectedly at her home at Hale Mahaolu-Elua in Kahului on February 20, 2020. She was born in Pu’unene on March 8, 1934 to the late Donato Amparo and Primitiva Casing Fillazar.

She is survived by her son Derek Barona, Sr. and daughter Lolita Susan Barona along with 2 grandsons Derek Barona Jr. (Keokeana) and Dustin Lacno (Kehaulani), a grand daughter Dawn Kepani Hobbs, and five great grand children: Kaikea and Kaimi Barona, and Kainalu, Ikaika, and Iliana Lacno. Also survived by Dawn Lynn Lacno, mother of Derek Jr and Dustin.

Also survived by a sister Amy Parilla (+Jesus Sr.) ; and brothers Euprepes “Billy” (Dorothy), Faustino “Foxy” (Betsy), and Nathan Pellazar (+Nellie), and Boni (Janice), Rocky, and Art Fillazar; also sisters-in-law Gloria (Don) Mazano (+Edward Pellazar) and Cheri Pellazar (+Claudio), and Millie Barona Cole.

She attended Pu’unene School and graduated from Baldwin High School, class of 1952. Jo-Ann worked at the then popular Seki’s Restaurant, and retired from Maui Land & Pineapple Company as a trimmer with 33 years of service. She was a great cook and baker and best known by family for her Jell-O layered desserts. She enjoyed traveling and shopping, watching the entertainment at Queen Kaahumanu Center, and being with family and friends.

Service will be held at Christ The King Catholic Church in Kahului on Saturday, March 21, 2020 with public visitation over urn at 9am followed by a Eulogy prior to the 11am Funeral Mass. Private scattering of ashes will take place at a later date. The family requests casual aloha attire. Floral arrangements are welcomed but no stand-up wreaths. Memorials may also be sent to Lolita Barona c/o 1889 Loke Street, Apt. 315, Wailuku, Hawai’I 96793. Ballard’s Mortuary is assisting with arrangements.
