Obituary for Patricia Arleen Nims

Patricia Arleen Nims passed away May 26 in Hilo, Hawaii. Born Patricia Arlene Tyler at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan on March 22, 1951. She grew up in Davis where her father, Walter S. Tyler was on the faculty of the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine and her mother Joan Y. Tyler worked as a RN first for a small group of local M.D.s and later for UCD Student Health Center. Pat was an early volunteer for Lady Bird Johnson’s Head Start program. She enjoyed that experience which led to a long career caring for disadvantaged and disabled children. She met her husband Richard G. Nims in 1984 and they married in 1985. Pat graduated from Sacramento City College Nursing School in 1994 where she won the McCulley Award for academic excellence and community service. Richard and Pat moved to Hawaii in 1997 where she spent her happiest years providing specialized nursing care, usually provided in clinics, to handicapped children. She loved meeting and helping people in their home environment. She was an avid knitter providing many blankets for Linus Project. Pat enjoyed propagating native plants. Like Lady Bird Johnson, she put native plant seeds and a small amount of soil in large gelatin capsules throwing them out the window when riding in a car. She was predeceased by her brother John E. Tyler. She is survived by her spouse Richard G. Nims, son Darius Yost, mother Joan Y. Rosenwald, and father Walter S. Tyler.
Pat’s preferred way to be remembered is by caring for those less fortunate and by growing plants native to the area.
